Preface

The Islamic Republic of Iran has an area of 1.648.195 square Kms and a population of more than 60 million. Iran is located in south west Asia in the Middle East. On the north, it borders the Caspian Sea, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan. On the south, it is connected to the open seas, Persian Gulf and Sea of Oman. On the west sides, Iran’s neighbours are Turkey and Iraq; and on the East, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Because of it’s special strategic location, Iran has always had a world-wide importance. During the past centuries, Iran has bridged the gap between East and West by having the good pass though it’s well-known path; such as the Silk Road, the Pearl Road and also India and Indus roads which passed through the ancient Persia.

At present, due to the collapse of the Soviet Union and appearance of newly independent countries on the northern border of Iran and their Intention to find import-export routes and to be independent from Russia, Iran’s role as a suitable medium has been renewed and soon she is going to regain it’s former status. In this respect, one should bear in mind many important factors such as safety, low cost and shorter times of good transportation.

Since transportation and communication are considered as a prerequisite in any economic development, Iran’s authorities have paid a special attention to the development of transportation and communication especially through railways. In this respect, the construction of Mashad-Sarakhs railroad was started in order to create a new intercontinental route which connects Asia to Europe. Also, the construction of Amir Abad’s Railway made her the first important Iranian port on the Caspian Sea to be connected to the railway network. Iran also began the construction of Kerman – Zahedan railway which will link the railways of Zahedan-Mirjaveh/Taftan – Quetta (Pakistan) railway to Iranian main network and thus the European railway network with the Indian subcontinent.
