History
In 1984 the "Tehran Metro Execution Plan" was approved by Majles (Iran Parliament) on the basis of legal project of "Amendment of Law of Establishment of Tehran Urban and suburban Railway Company" which had been founded on Farvardin 1363 (April 1984).
Works proceeded slowly due to Iran-Iraq war but resumed by the summer of 1987 under management of Iranian staff and experts, with a priority on line1 (From Blvd. Shahid Ayatollah Haghani to City of Rey) and its extention to Behesht-e-Zahra Cemetery, and line2 (From Dardasht in Tehran Pars district to Sadeghiyeh Second Square) and an extending towards the City of Karaj and Mehrshahr district. Also necessary measures to establish line3 and 4 and studies on their extention began.
On march 7, 1999, Tehran-Karaj express electric train started a limited service of 31,4 km between Azadi Square (Tehran) and Malard (Karaj) calling at one intermediate stop at Vardavard. Some 11 more stops are to be made available in the future. Each train offers 1,400 seats. Over 100 million passengers per year are expected.
Construction works of stations, tunnels and bridges on both subway lines 1 and 2 are currently widely finished. Track laying, installation of electric power supply and traffic control equipment are under way. Electric multiple units for the subway lines and electric locomotivies for the Karaj railway are being delivered from Chinese manufactors. Double-deck passenger cars for the commuter line have been constructed by Pars Wagon factory in Arak.

Mashad Urban Railway
The city of Mashad with a population of 2,2 milions has planned a light rail network. Works for the first line have started in 1999. Esfahan Urban Railway
Esfahan is the centre of communications for region, the market town of the market region and a chief centre of attraction in central Iran.
It is built around many beautiful mosques, palaces, avenues, bridges and parks and any new development in the city must be conscious of the need to retain its fine urban form.
According to the statistic report in 1998 the population of Esfahan province has been 4,370,000 which half of this population is concentrated in cities. 32% of the population is under 16 years old, 62% are between 15 and 64 years old and only 6% are over 64 years old, it is obvious that population of Esfahan is young and in 10 years from now it is going to need more city services.
In the city the growth of the car population has led to ever increasing pollution and congestion. In order to alleviate the worsening traffic conditions, especially on the important regional routes, the Esfahan Regional Metro Company (ERMC), later it was converted to Esfahan Urban Railway Organization (EURO), was formed with the task of investigating a suitable mass transit system in Esfahan city and the region.
The city priority line, North-South A line , from Kaveh intercity bus terminal to Soffeh intercity bus terminal (12.5 km) includes 15 stations. This line is going to be in operation in two phases. Phase one which is from Kaveh station to Imam Hossein station (4.7 km) will be finished in 2005 and phase two which is from Imam Hossein station to Soffeh station (7.8 km) is supposed to be finished in 2007. Implementing of these two phases are going to be carried out in three parts. Part one from Kaveh depot to Shohada station, is under construction (started june 2001), top down method is being applied in this part. Second part from Shohada station to Azadi station is under priliminary design, TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) is going to be used here in this part.
