topIranian Railways announced on March 5 that it had put into operation the second track on its 926 km main line between Tehran and Mashhad. Work on the double-tracking began in 1994, and the bulk of the work was finished by 2001. Iranian President Mohammed Khatami participated in ceremonies on June 10 last year to mark the formal completion of the project.
As well as connecting the Iranian capital to the principal city in Khorasan province, the route has become a key corridor between the Persian Gulf and the Central Asian states following the opening of the Mashhad - Sarakhs link into Turkmenistan.
The second track has been laid with UIC60 rails on B-70 prestressed monobloc concrete sleepers. The two tracks are laid at 4 700 mm centres. Total cost of the scheme is put at US$6bn, of which 43% was spent on subgrade construction, ballasting plus the remodelling of 53 intermediate stations, and the remainder on the track itself. Not included in the total is the cost of installing modern electric signalling and telecommunications throughout.
RAI expects the doubling work to raise the average daily traffic on the route from 17 to 40 trains each way per day. This will permit an increase in business from 2·7 to 10 million passengers and from 1·5 to 7 million tonnes of freight per year. In parallel, RAI has built additional platforms at Tehran's main station and remodelled the layout to segregate freight and passenger operations. The extra capacity has permitted the introduction of suburban services between Tehran, Gharechak, Varamin, Baqerabad, Pishva, and Imamzade Jafar.
The remodelled line has been laid out for regular operation at 160 km/h, with the provision for 200 km/h in the future. This will cut journey times by the fastest diesel-hauled expresses from 14 to 10 h. Further planned improvements include the installation of CTC and automatic train protection to improve safety and reduce operating costs.
